Exercise and Parkinson's Disease

The Parkinson’s Movement Program

Here at eFitClub, we have developed a program for improving symptoms associated with Parkinson’s Disease (PD). This program is so meaningful to our staff as Jay and Mary Ann’s family have been affected and Kristen has worked closely with those living with the disease for years. According the Parkinson’s Foundation, more than 12,400 people are affected by PD in South Carolina alone! We want to help improve their lives and become a hub of support.

Why exercise?

Exercise is great for PD because it can help relieve motor symptoms like tremor, gait, coordination, and improve muscle tone. Movement is also key in improving non-motor symptoms, like sleep problems and constipation. As exercise experts, we always get asked what the best type of exercise is. Our answer is simple: there are so many great types of exercise out there. We encourage you to try them all!

What type of exercise?

Although any one exercise cannot isolate one benefit, some types can benefit more to a specific symptom. Exercises to target balance can be found in yoga, chair yoga, and Tai Chi. Boxing and interval movements can improve coordination and agility. An added benefit from any movements that elevate heart rate will target memory and thinking.

Exercise and Meds

An exercise specialist, physician, or other health professional can help you find a time your mediation works best for exercise. Ideally, you want to be peak dose to get the most out of your session with best mobility and potential. This process may take a while. Your exercise professional can gradually work towards complex movements once the right combination is found.

When to Start

Now! Our Parkinson’s Movement Program meets twice a week. An assessment with an Exercise Physiologist will kick-start your exercise program. We meet two times a week in a group setting and will address specific goals for the individual and the group.
