How to Choose a Yoga Mat

Recently you decided to try a yoga class-now how about choosing the right mat!  Yoga mats can be very personal and individualized.  Years ago there were only a few choices-most “sticky” mats were made of PVC and limited in materials, size and color-mainly blue and purple.  Today there is an endless array of styles, materials and prices based on your preferences.

1.         Thickness

Yoga mats typically range from ⅛  inch - ¼ inch in thickness.  If you have knee or spinal issues, you may want a mat with more cushion for added comfort and support.  However, the trade off is it becomes more challenging for standing balance work particularly if you are new and just beginning to practice your yoga poses.  It’s also important to feel “grounded” with a strong connection to the floor so selecting a thinner mat might be a better option. Another consideration is portability - if you plan to travel with your mat, go with the ¼ inch mat that you can fold and store more easily.

2.         Material/Texture

Standard mats are made of vinyl (PVC) but there are newer more “eco-friendly” options made from recycled rubber, jute and cotton if that is important to you. If you are allergic to latex, avoid the rubberized ones. The texture determines how much traction your mat provides as well as how much “slipping  and sliding” you do. Yoga mats can range from completely smooth to a rougher,  more “bumpier” version.  Again, it gets back to your comfort level and how “anchored” you feel to the floor.  If you prefer smoothness, go with a PVC mat which also has the highest stickiness factor.  This is important in helping you maintain your alignment as you move from posture to posture helping to prevent slippage.

3.         Style/Pricing

Generally, a basic ⅛ inch solid color mat is priced on the lower end.  There are unlimited patterns,  designs, colors, cool textures and logos to choose from.    Earth-friendly mats tend to be a bit more expensive.
